Internationally-acclaimed tenor and Grammy Award nominee Joseph Calleja has been appointed Malta’s first cultural ambassador.  Joseph Calleja's debut happened in 1997 at Teatru Astra where he sang the role of Macduff in Guiseppe Verdi’s opera Macbeth

Besides exposing patrons to word-class singers Teatru Astra has been the venue where internationally acclaimed local artists debuted their operatic career. Joseph Calleja definitely tops this list.  Calleja himself acknowledged Teatru Astra in an interview which was aired prominently on TVM's main 8pm news bulletin on Sunday 12 February.  Joseph Calleja returned to Teatru Astra in 2005 in La Boheme and back as Macduff in Teatru Astra’s second Macbeth, which marked the tenth anniversary of one of Socjeta’ Filarmonika La Stella's greatest milestones.
