Teatru Astra rejoices in the news that the internationally acclaimed tenor Joseph Calleja has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Malta.  Tenor Joseph Calleja, one of the world’s finest opera singers and the cultural ambassador for the country, made his professional debut at Teatru Astra, in Gozo in 1997 singing the role of Macduff. Calleja returned to the Astra in 2005 for La Boheme and then ten years after debut, in 2007, singing again Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth.

Since his debut at Teatru Astra, Calljea has practically toured the world performing on most of the world’s leading opera stages, including New York’s Metropolitan and London’s Royal Opera House.

The council of the University of Malta approved the senate’s recommendation to award Mr Calleja the degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa. The degree ceremony was held at the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta on 2 November 2012.
