Teatru Astra is proud to announce a top tier cast for the upcoming Donizetti's all-time favourite Lucia di Lamermoor. Lucia will be interpreted by Serenad Uyar whose outstanding rich-timbered voice, commanding impressive reserves of strength and a nobility of emission, and an impeccable intonation have made her an automatic choice with flagship theatres for this tragic role. Flanking her is Giulio Pelligra (Edgardo), an absolute joy to listen to, product of the real Italian school, blessed with a highly-placed and bright ringing tone, a direct hit with opera audiences worldwide. Pelligra has been hailed as one of the most exciting tenors of his generation. The bel canto age is synonymous with charm, grace, elegance, superb phrasing, a wide palette of colours and nuances: that's what Boris Pinkhasovich stands for. Russian baritone with the quintessential native timbre, Pinkhasovich has been a sensation with his superb and intense interpretations of Enrico, combining magnificence with elegance to a very high degree. A very welcome return to the Astra boards is Dario Russo (Raimondo) whose magisterial interpretation of Oroveso (among other roles) displayed the grandeur of his timbre coupled with towering presence.

The Teatru Astra has been instrumental in launching the careers of budding local singers. Not least the meteoric rise of Joseph Calleja who is this year celebrating his 20th anniversary on the world stage. Another at home artist is Cliff Zammit Stevens whose credentials are second to none in bel canto roles. Zammit Stevens has been entrusted with the role of Arturo. Possessing an effortless beautiful tenor voice and an endearing personality, Zammit Stevens is set to blend seamlessly with the principals, guaranteeing a Lucia to remember. Secondary roles are being taken up by Marvic Monreal (Alice) and Bernard Busuttil (Normanno).

Lucia, which kick-starts the sixteenth edition of Festival Mediterranea, will performed in a double representation on Thursday 26 and Saturday 28 October at 19.30hrs and is supported by the Gozo Cultural Support Fund.
