Of battles and victories...breakthroughs and primacy. Teatru Astra looks forward to the long-awaited return of a rare Verdi opera in October 2024. Giovanna d'Arco will make its triumphant return to enchant Maltese audiences after its absence since 1852 when it was produced for the first and last time in Malta at the Royal Opera House in Valletta.

In a momentous occasion set to captivate audiences with its stunning melodies, powerful drama, and exceptional performances, reaffirming the opera's enduring legacy and gracing Astra's stage, Malta's opera-goers can prepare themselves to be transported back in time to the tumultuous 15th century, where the awe-inspiring tale of the heroic French maiden Joan of Arc comes to life on stage. Teatru Astra will as usual be sparing no effort in bringing Verdi's masterpiece to contemporary audiences with an enchanting production that balances tradition with innovative artistic vision.

Giovanna d'Arco tells the compelling and tragic story of Joan of Arc, the iconic 15th-century French warrior, and martyr. Composed by the revered Giuseppe Verdi during his infamous anni di galera, known for his emotional depth and stirring melodies, this opera delves into the complexities of faith, duty, and sacrifice, painting a vivid portrait of a fearless young woman who defied all odds to lead her nation.

This production will be helmed by Astra's visionary director Enrico Stinchelli, whose innovative approach to storytelling and meticulous attention to detail are known to transport attendees to the tumultuous period of the Hundred Years' War. The opera will be conducted by Astra's esteemed Mro Dr John Galea, certainly not a new name in the local opera scene. This opera promises to be an unforgettable exploration of courage, conviction, and the enduring power of the human spirit, encapsulating the fervour of religious devotion, the trials of warfare, and the indomitable spirit of a young woman destined for greatness. Verdi's evocative score, characterized by its stirring arias and emotionally charged ensembles, beautifully complements the unfolding drama on stage.
