|Sister Act at Teatru Astra|
Teatru Astra proudly presents its fifth consecutive live musical. This season, Astra is planning to continue the diversification of its genres and repertoire, through the choice of 'Sister Act', a 1992 American blockbuster turned into a record-breaking hit musical in the recent years.
Three performances have so far been announced on the 20, 21 and 22 March 2020.
The action is set in 1970s Philadelphia, when an aspiring disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, is auditioning to perform at her gangster boyfriend's nightclub. She believes that he is going to introduce her to a big producer, but is upset to hear him tell her that she is not ready for it. Hurt by his rejection, she decides to break up with him, yet is surprised to catch him red handed murdering one of his companions. Frustrated, she runs to the police, who in turn hide her in a convent until her boyfriend, Curtis, is brought to trial. Deloris does not catch up with the convent's restraints at all, however she finds spiritual refuge when she is introduced to the convent's struggling choir, noticing that many of the nuns, are actually quite fun to be around. Deloris uses her singing talent to inspire the other nuns to create a more contemporary choir, turning it into the talk of the town. Word of their success reaches Curtis and his mob, who arrive on the scene to settle their score with Deloris and find themselves battling not only her, but a gang of feisty nuns and the Mother Superior as well.
Composed by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Glenn Slater, 'Sister Act' premiered in California in 2006, breaking records and becoming the highest ever grossing show at the venue. The musical, was described as having "Broadway blockbuster written all over it," by the Los Angeles Times, while The Hollywood Reporter noted that it was "hugely entertaining... likely to become a classic" Following this success, 'Sister Act' opened in London's West End, at the London Palladium, in 2009, with a cast consisting of some of the UK's most notable pop stars.
'Sister Act' will be held in March 2020 at Teatru Astra, Victoria â Gozo. Once again, Chris Gatt has been entrusted with the role of artistic director and will be leading the creative team, which will include Mro Sigmund Mifsud who will be conducting his fifth consecutive musical at the Astra, Mariella Spiteri Cefai as vocal director and Francesco Nicodeme as choreographer.
